D-Cube's observer nodes are currently supporting two hardware platforms:

  1. Tmote Sky. D-Cube embeds 48 Advanticsys MTM-CM5000-MSP motes: IEEE 802.15.4-compliant wireless sensor nodes based on the original open-source TelosB (Tmote Sky) platform design developed and published by the University of California, Berkeley (datasheet). Based on the MSP430 microcontroller and the IEEE 802.15.4-compliant Texas Instruments CC2420 radio transceiver, the Berkeley motes have been driving wireless sensor networks and IoT research for the past 15 years, and a large number of low-power wireless protocols have been ported and tested on this platform.

  3. nRF52840. D-Cube embeds 48 Nordic Semiconductors nRF52840-DK nodes: versatile single-board development kits for Bluetooth 5, Bluetooth mesh, Thread, Zigbee, 802.15.4, ANT, and 2.4 GHz proprietary applications (datasheet). Based on an ARM Cortex-M4 with floating point support, the nRF52840 is one of the new-generation IoT platforms and has received attention from the low-power wireless community thanks to its support for multiple radio technologies (including BLE 5).
